We know that Birth Control is a big topic, with some heavy history. It can feel pretty daunting to even experienced health teachers. This course is designed to help you explore the various methods of Contraception and provide you with the knowledge and skills to teach it effectively. Our hope is that you walk away feeling empowered with new skills you can draw upon to make teaching Birth Control less unsettling and more comfortable.
Birth Control: Then and Now

Do you know how birth control was initially developed? How about disparities in care? This lesson will teach take you through the history and current state of affairs regarding birth control development, use, and the people who use it.

Birth Control 101

Together we'll review all the ins and outs of the many methods of birth control, helping to build your foundational knowledge and confidence as you teach about contraception.

How To Talk About Clinical Services

Through a short scenario, we'll explore some student anxieties about receiving birth control, and what our role as educators can be to assist student's in seeking medical care.

What to expect from our course...?

 I. Birth Control: Then and Now.

We’ll explore how birth control came to be in the United States, thinking critically about the role that racism and misogyny played throughout history. We’ll think about how generational trauma can show up in class and provide you with skills you can implement in your class to promote self-care and compassion.

     II. Birth Control 101.

We will take a deeper look into each method of birth control, and provide you with additional background knowledge in order to effectively teach on contraception.

    III. How to Incorporate Clinical Services into Sex. Ed.

Through two short videos we will model how to engage with students about clinic services, dispelling myths and answering difficult questions that student have related to sexual health.

   IV. Summary and Closing.

We will wrap it all up, and provide you with helpful resources to keep the learning going.

New York City Teens Connection brings together youth, parents, community-based organizations, schools, clinics, and citywide agencies in a comprehensive effort to reduce the incidence of sexually transmitted infections and unintended teen pregnancy. NYC Teens Connection supports evidence-based sexual health programs in schools, helps link schools to nearby quality clinics for teens, and increases community awareness about teen sexual health.



A program of the New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene (DOHMH), we are funded by the US Department of Health and Human Services’ Office of Population Affairs (OPA), and work closely with the New York City Department of Education (DOE). We started as a comprehensive effort in the Bronx in 2010. In 2015 we expanded to all five boroughs. Since our origin, we have provided over 75,000 youth with quality, comprehensive sexual health education.
